ADRIAN MUTU could face financial ruin after FIFA ordered him to pay Chelsea a staggering £14million.

The Romanian forward, 29, was sacked by the Blues in October 2004 after testing positive for cocaine..

Mutu - who now plays for Seria A club Fiorentina - was banned from playing football for seven months and fined £20,000 by the FA.

But now he must cough up a world record sum after the Stamford Bridge side successfully won damages against their former player.

A Chelsea statement read: "The club can confirm that it has received the decision from FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on the claim made against Adrian Mutu.”

“Chelsea is delighted with the DRC’s decision to award the club compensation."

Mutu was signed in 2003 from Parma for £15.8m at the start of the Roman Abramovich era and enjoyed a promising start at Stamford Bridge before his form tailed off.

And after his dismissal for failing the drugs test, Chelsea began proceedings to claim compensation from him.

The statement continued: "This is an important decision for football. Not only did the DRC make us a very significant monetary award, the decision also recognised the damaging effect incidents involving drugs has on football and the responsibilities we all have in this area.

"Chelsea will now be following the process laid out in the DRC’s decision to claim the money from Mutu.”

Mutu's lawyer, Cristian Sarbu, claimed earlier this summer that his client was told to pay £9.6m by FIFA and that the player would contest the ruling.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport had ordered FIFA to make a ruling and the matter went to the Dispute Resolution Chamber of the world governing body.

But the £13.68m compensation Mutu must pay is a world-record figure for a player and was worked out on the amount of value left on the remaining period of his Chelsea contract before he was sacked.

Mutu is almost certain to appeal the penalty, further protracting a dispute that has been in the hands of lawyers for four years, and one which has run up a six-figure legal bill for the Stamford Bridge club.
OUCH! 14 Million pounds. As it said, that´s a world record fee for a football player...now why can´t they make Barton pay that??

Good to see that football player´s get as good as they deserve for earning so much.
